KeyTweak v1.12 [160k] Win2k/XP FREE

http://webpages.charter.net/krumsick

{Remap the keyboard} Are there keys you never use? Those using laptops may be missing out on keys typically found on full-sized keyboards. I never use Insert, Caps Lock, and Scroll Lock. Let's make them useful, shall we? Enter KeyTweak, a utility for changing keys to dump the useless and replace with the handy. This is not the type of utility to convert CTRL+ALT+DEL into one key, but rather one-to-one change. For instance, change the Caps Lock key to open the calculator. Convert the right-ALT key to a letter that has stopped working on your keyboard. [Lejvs - that's what I get for the baby remapping my keyboard when I wasn't looking]

The Office Experts Downloads (Tools for Office programs)

833K Win98/2k/XP FREE
http://www.theofficeexperts.com/downloads.htm
{Tools for Office programs} Whenever trying to create a complicated spreadsheet to do things other than financial-related activities, I search Microsoft and the Internet for templates, but often they don't do anything useful. The Excel downloads available on this site do a few nifty things including a quiz, creating user forms, invoicing, and a thesaurus. Also available are a few handy downloads for Word, Access, and PowerPoint. The MyAddies, an address book for Access, is a good way to learn how to create a database with a form. Open the database and click on the Design icon. Explore! While you're here, you can pick up a few good tips from The Office Experts. [Meryl]

PDF Moto v1.4 [9.4M] W2k/XP FREE

http://www.mywebattack.com/gnomeapp.php?id=106751

PDF Moto is automated Web publishing software that converts any MS Word, Excel, or Visio document into PDF format, and can automatically upload it to your Web site and create an index page linking to the files. In fact, it can create entire Web sites automatically. The program uses a centralized approach that allows you to specify a local folder, and any document saved to that folder will be automatically converted and saved to a publishing folder. >From there, it can be uploaded to your Web site. The entire process can run automatically; you save a Word document to your specified folder, and it is converted and added to the Web site without further interaction on your end. Navigation and linking are automatically created and the look and feel can be matched with your existing designs using a powerful XML template system. You can even choose to have it create PHP or ASP pages. PDFMoto monitors the source document structure, detects documents that have been added, deleted, or amended, and reflects these changes by automatically updating the site. Additional features include browser-based document submission, document management, unlimited Web site destinations and support for Meta schemes. The free version can maintain a Web site with up to 100 documents and adds a small, very discreet 'Created with...' watermark to the pages. [MWA]

Advanced Anti Keylogger v3.0 [480k] W2k/XP FREE

http://www.mywebattack.com/gnomeapp.php?id=106574

Advanced Anti Keylogger is a powerful but easy-to-use anti-spy software to prohibit and control operation of any keylogger tool. It does not rely on a spyware database or requires updates, but rather intercepts any attempt to intercept or hook keyword activity. Since many programs use these techniques for perfectly legitimate functions (hotkeys, keyboard shortcuts, etc.) it offers a rule-based mode, that works similar to a firewall for your keyboard by prompting you each time a hook is detected; you have then the option to allow or deny the action. A built-in rules manager allows you to view the list of allowed or blocked applications, and change status for each. You can optionally run the program in a high-security mode, which will block all keyboard interception, good or bad. [MWA]

SavePicNoAsk v1.0 [550K] W98/2k/XP FREE

http://www.unhsolutions.net/SPNA/

{IE images} When right-clicking an image and selecting "Save picture as," the dialog box opens the default folder, "My Pictures." Picky people like me don't use Microsoft's default folders (for whatever reason), and SavePicNoAsk lets us pick the folder for storing the pictures. It also provides the option of using the same file name on the Web site or using a numbered file name such as 00001.jpg for the image. There is an option for creating a new folder for each Web page or for each Web site. When all the options are selected, instead of using "Save picture as," click on "Save picture." No more pop-up dialog box - with one step the picture is saved in the pre-selected folder with the Web site's assigned file name or a numbered file name. Note: SavePicNoAsk requires Internet Explorer 5.0 or higher. The author notes that the only reason for SavePicNoAsk to fail is usually incorrect proxy connection configuration. [Meryl]

DOWNLOAD: Adobe Reader SpeedUp v1.12
58K Win9x/2k/XP FREE

http://www.tnk-bootblock.co.uk/prods/misc/index.php

{Speedup the super slow Acrobat} I get annoyed whenever I have to open a PDF file through the Internet because it's @(*$# slow. This program promises to speed up the process to make it bearable. Works with Acrobat versions 3 through 6.01. Crossed my fingers in hopes the program works and it does. The PDF files are noticeably loading faster. Since I am using a full version of Acrobat, it might be slower for me than most. With each new release, the program (as with most) gets more bloated and slower to load. SpeedUp will ease the pain. However, it has one bug. When I read an eBook with links, the links don't work correctly. I just disable it and it works again. [Meryl]
SmartGesture Lite v1.0.1 [1.2M] W98/2k/XP FREE

http://www.mywebattack.com/gnomeapp.php?id=106522

SmartGesture Lite enables you to launch different commands by using mouse gestures rather than keyboard input. You can open files, run programs and operating system commands, launch Web sites, and imitate keyboard input, all with a single gesture. The program comes with an easy-to-use interface and comes with pre- defined movements that can be easily assigned to your actions. It has a modern, simple, and intuitively understandable interface. SmartGesture Lite can also be used with Tablet PC. The Lite version is limited to seven gestures. [MWA]

Atlantis Nova v1.0.0.65 [900k] W9x/2k/XP FREE

http://www.rssol.com/en/

{Word processor} If you don't know MS Word like the back of your hand, then you'd almost never realize you're not using it when running Atlantis Nova. Unlike the monopolized word processor, Atlantis is compact and can convert graphical images. Its features are too numerous to mention. Immediately noticeable differences include the hot calculator, which performs mathematical calculations, and getting the document statistics with one click (I love this). Also unique is the clippy bank, a feature similar to the clipboard for adding or removing data. The learning curve for using Atlantis Nova is small for anyone who has used MS Word. It didn't feel awkward or new to try it out. This may be the solution for those with zero or small budgets. The program DOES support .DOC files, so opening such files isn't an issue. In fact, I opened a .DOC file that used strikeout text, and the strikeout appeared. There's a paid version of the software, but it's small potatoes compared to you-know-what. [Meryl]

QuickMenu v2.0 [360k] WinXP FREE

http://darksky.s21.xrea.com/sw/qm/index2.html

{Quickstart menu} When right-clicking on the Desktop, a menu pops up with applications and folders. QuickMenu extends this functionality by making it easier to drag and drop applications to it or through the program's dialog box. This is a figure-it-out- yourself program, because there are no instructions included. Since the utility is from Japan, the English is imperfect. On the main dialog box, select "Folder" to add a folder or click "Paper" to add a file to QuickMenu. Continue doing this until all desired items are selected. Clicking on the QuickMenu icon in the system tray lists the selected items. In the dialog box, select "Enable Desktop Menu Shell Extension" to get QuickMenu to appear when right-clicking the Desktop. It has the option for running when the PC starts up. This utility is easier to use than Windows's method of adding items to the QuickMenu. [Meryl]

Abyss Web Server v1.1.5 [133k] W9x/2k/XP FREE

http://www.aprelium.com/abyssws/

{Personal Web server} Running a Web server isn't just for hosting a Web site on a computer. It's a great tool for learning .asp, .php, and .cgi scripting. Apache is one of the more widely used free Web server applications, but it's complicated and not easy to learn without some help. Furthermore, it does .php, but not .asp. Microsoft's IIS is another tool, and you can install it to learn .asp, but not .php. Abyss Web Server can support .asp, .php, and PERL after downloading additional free software. Abyss uses a graphical user interface for managing the server, making it easier for users to manage, even remotely. The application is small by server standards, and doesn't hog the memory. Expect the basics found in server applications including HTTP, keep-alive, CGI, SSI, index file, aliases, MIME types, and custom error pages support. Those who have yet to make the move into managing a Web server may find this a good place to start before trying the bigger and fancier apps. [Meryl]

StripFile v1.0.1 [861k] W98/2k/XP FREE

http://www.nuetools.co.uk/stripfile.html

{Reduce Web file sizes} StripFile is a utility for stripping out useless junk or information in GIF, JPG, PNG, and HTML files, thereby reducing the files as much as 40 to 50 percent. Remember the golden rule of a Web site: the smaller the file, the faster it downloads, and the shorter the wait. Oh, and it also keeps bandwidth use as low as possible. The first test was a JPG file that I had optimized using a graphics program. StripFile couldn't compress it further. Next, I tried a few files I downloaded from free resources, and StripFile reduced them to 30 to 50 percent. I let it strip an entire folder of over 300 free downloaded files and it stripped about 28 percent total, saving about 7,209,326 bytes. In comparing the "before" and "after" file folders, the numbers told the story: the files got smaller. My only complaint is that the utility creates a backup folder in different places, depending on what folder is stripped. It would be better to give the user control of where to place the backup folder. No jokes about stripping, folks! [Meryl]

CDBurnerXP Pro v1.1.7 [8.0M] W98/2k/XP FREE

http://www.mywebattack.com/gnomeapp.php?id=106386

CDBurnerXP Pro is an easy-to-use CD burning software that can write CD-R and CD-RW discs. The program can also write disks directly from an ISO image file, and save the image as an ISO image file (*.iso). You can create data and audio CDs; however, it currently only supports WAV files for audio. It does, however, support Burn-Proof technology, multi-session disks, import of ISO images, and more. In addition to CD burning, you can also rip audio CDs, normalize WAV files, encode MP3 files, erase disks, etc. CDBurnerXP Pro does not require ASPI when used under for NT/2000/XP. [MWA]

WinSQL Lite without ODBC Drivers v4.1.25.505 [3.0M] W9x/2k/XP

http://www.indus-soft.com/SynametricsWebApp/WinSQL.jsp

{Interface with databases} This utility is mainly for DBAs and programmers who deal with databases, providing them with a tool to talk to any database through ODBC. Think of it as one interface that can connect to many back-end databases such as Oracle, DB2, Sybase, MS SQL Server and Information, through ODBC. Although there is no charge for the lite version, it requires registration prior to downloading the file. The Web site has a features matrix so you can clearly understand the difference between Lite and Professional. [Meryl]

HSLAB Shutdown Folder Lite v1.4.1.38 [1.9M] W98/2k/XP FREE

http://www.mywebattack.com/gnomeapp.php?id=106254

HSLAB Shutdown Folder is a utility that provides a service similar to the Windows Startup Folder, only that it performs actions when Windows is shutting down. It can launch applications, command files (*.bat,*.cmd), and symbolic links placed into the Shutdown Folder just before Windows shuts down. If there are items placed in the Shutdown Folder, the program intercepts the regular shutdown process, launches the executables or scripts and waits for them to finish - then continues with the regular shutdown. It's useful for executing backups, cleanups, or other maintenance operations on a regular basis. The actions can optionally be performed at LogOff as well. [MWA]

StripFile v1.01 [861k] W98/2k/XP FREE

http://www.mywebattack.com/gnomeapp.php?id=106200

StripFile is a tool for reducing the size of HTML and image (GIF, JPEG, PNG) files. It allows you to remove redundant information from those files, thereby reducing the size in some cases by up to 50% or more (depending on file type). StripFile only removes embedded data from image files; it does not alter the actual images. The program can process selected files or entire folders (with subfolders) and process images and HTML files at the same time, allowing Webmasters to optimize their entire site in a single run. The results vary strongly and depend on the files that are processed; HTML files with many comments and spaces usually produce much greater savings then most images. The program is easy to use and also integrates into the Windows Explorer right-click menu. [MWA]

Advanced Hide Folders v4.0 [266k] W9x/2k/XP FREE

http://www.mywebattack.com/gnomeapp.php?id=106214

Advanced Hide Folders enables you to completely hide folders and files on your computer. The hidden files cannot be accessed unless the folders are unlocked with a password from within the program. You can simply drag and drop folders from Windows or add files by mask (e.g., hide all JPG files). In addition, as an added security measure, you can also lock the hidden files. Advanced Hide Folders also prevents access to your confidential files via MRU features (e.g., list of Most Recently Used documents in MS Office). Additional features include hotkey operation and optional stealth mode. The program is easy to use and has a professional interface. [MWA]

CleanUp! v3.0 [256K] Win9x/2k/XP FREE

http://cleanup.stevengould.org/

{Remove temporary files} CleanUp? That's a surefire way to attract this organization-freak's attention, but only if it doesn't require a broom and mop. The program deletes the temporary files that are created while you're surfing the Web (including cache, cookies, and history), clears out temporary folders, and totals deleted files to prevent retrieval of their contents with lower- level disk tools. All these features are a step toward protecting what little privacy we have these days. Games have high scores and we all want to be on the high scores list, right? Even CleanUp! has a list of disk space recovery records. That's one list I don't wish to join, especially when the top record is 3.75 GB. Yeah, I better go do some cleaning... but all I have to do is sit here and let CleanUp! do its thing. [Meryl]

Additional features include automatic re-encryption after editing, wiping of files and temporaries, cryptographic data integrity validation, separate key and data encrypting keys, secure internal memory handler and more. AxCrypt's strongest advantage is the straightforward one-click way to process files. There is no extra interface to configure or open, other than selecting/entering your password. [MWA]

ID-Blaster Plus v2.0 [544k] W9x/2k/XP FREE

http://www.mywebattack.com/gnomeapp.php?id=105626

ID-Blaster Plus allows you to edit Windows Product ID or UserID numbers. Since these numbers are unique for each PC, they could potentially be used to track computer activity or associate a computer with a particular person (even though their actual purpose is quite different). ID-Blaster Plus works by changing these ID numbers frequently, destroying potential tracking tactics using these numbers. ID-Blaster can run from the System Tray, using up very little resources, and constantly protecting you in the background. Be advised that these numbers may be needed for system upgrades or re-installations. Use with caution! [MWA]

O&O DriveLED v1.0.74 [3.4M] W2k/XP FREE

http://www.oosoft.de/english/products/oodl/
ftp://ftp.oosoft.de/pub/oodriveled/oodled_1_0_74_english.zip

"Have you often asked yourself why your hard disk starts up even when you aren't writing anything to it? Until now, you could only check hard disk activity by looking at the little lamp (LED) on the front of your computer. But who wants to be constantly looking under the table whilst trying to work or play games? From now on, you don't have to crane your neck anymore to see if your hard disk is currently active. Now you can use O&O DriveLED." The program takes the hard disk LED that is built into the computer and slaps it onto your screen. It provides information on activities relating to virtual drives and makes it possible to see the difference between disk-reading and disk-writing activity. [Meryl]

SpywareBlaster v1.1 [447k] W9x/2k/XP FREE

http://www.mywebattack.com/gnomeapp.php?id=105693

SpywareBlaster doesn't scan and clean for so-called spyware - it prevents it from being installed in the first place. It achieves this by disabling the CLSIDs of popular spyware ActiveX controls, and also prevents the installation of any of them via a webpage. This allows you to run Internet Explorer with Active-X enabled, but it will never download or even prompt you for any of the known ActiveX controls. All other Active-X controls or plug-ins will work fine. The SpywareBlaster database contains information on these known spyware Active-X controls and can be updated with the click of a button. The application windows displays a list of all controls that it is able to detect (this is not a list of what was found on your computer). The program cannot detect if you have any of the known objects already installed, but if you do, they will be disabled. SpywareBlaster has no documentation and does not provide any details as to why those ActiveX controls are considered to be spware - most of them appear to be advertising related though.

Angry IP Scanner v2.13 [99k] W9x/2k/XP FREE

http://www.angryziber.com/ipscan/

{IP Scanner} I've mentioned many times that my heart truly belongs to networking technology. The ability to communicate with an individual over a great distance just makes me giddy. Angry IP Scanner is a piece of software that will let you scan any range of IP addresses looking for a live connection, or you can search a specific hostname on your network to find the IP address. Once you have scanned your desired set of IP addresses, you are left with a listing that has the information on whether an IP address is dead or active. You can export this list to an HTML, XML, TXT, or CSV file. (The CSV file is great for importing information into Excel.) You can right-click an active IP address and get the NetBIOS information, or perform tasks such as opening the IP address in a Web browser, opening the IP address in an explorer window, open an FTP connection (if possible), telnet to the IP address, or start a traceroute command. Angry IP Scanner is small enough to fit on a floppy, so you can take it with you anywhere. I use Angry IP Scanner to keep track of my internal network and as an easy way to get a range of IPs into Excel for network documentation. You can come up with your own use for Angry IP Scanner, and the best part is that it doesn't cost you a dime to do it! [Brian]

SRE|Copy v1.0 [1.6M] W9x/2k/XP FREE

http://www.pinedanet.com/products/srecopy/index.html

SRE|copy is a file transfer tool that enables you to do local and network transfer with resume support. If you have ever copied large amounts of data from one machine to another, you know that it can be time consuming and often slow down computer performance. With SRE|copy, you have the option to pause and resume your file transfers at any time. The program does not replace the standard Windows copy function but rather appears as an additional option after drag/dropping a folder or drive and only jumps into action when you select it."

{Change the install} There was once a time when EXE files ruled the installation arena, but nowadays it is the MSI file. Msilaunch gives you the power to change what files in the MSI installer file are launched after installation. For the advanced users in the audience, you can also configure your own custom script that can be run after installation. As a systems administrator, this application gives me a little more control over how I roll out program installations on a large number of computers. SlideMaker Tool v1.0 [490k] W2k/XP FREE

http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/release.asp?ReleaseID=44510

The tool generates HTML+TIME (Timed Interactive Multimedia Extensions) declarative markup code that provides the slide show functionality." SlideMaker lets you choose what you add for each slide, whether it is a file or a URL that points to a specific file. You can add music or just rely on the built-in sound of your slide (like if you inserted an AVI movie file). SlideMaker will also let you loop the slideshow, edit the caption for each slide, change the transition effect and even the duration of each slide and transition. You have the choice to save the slideshow as an SMK (SlideMaker) file for later editing, or as an HTML file that you can upload to your Web site. Outport [414k] W9x/2k/XP FREE

http://www.cyberus.ca/~phoenix/outport/

Outport aims to be a generic program for exporting date from Outlook (Outlook + export = Outport. Original eh? :-) ) to various email/pim programs. It currently it can export to the Contact, Calendar and Task formats of Evolution, plus a number of generic formats supported by Outlook itself (Rich Text Format, HTML, vCalendar, vCard, iCalendar, etc). I've tested this specifically with Outlook 2000 and Evolution 1.0, and it works reasonably well with those. I have not tested this with any other version of Outlook, nor the recently released Evolution 1.01; I assume it will work with those, but don't be surprised if it doesn't.

Pathbuddy v1.0 [491k] W9x/2k/XP FREE

http://www.mywebattack.com/gnomeapp.php?id=105465

Pathbuddy lets you define hotkeys for selecting folders in almost any program's Open & Save dialog (as well as Windows Explorer). Normally, when you open a Save dialog, you need to navigate to the folder that you want to use, which can often be annoying. Pathbuddy allows you to switch the dialog to any of your favorite folders instantly, by simply pressing the WinKey + a custom letter/number. So for example, if I wanted to save a file in C:\Testfiles\webattack\etc\ - I could just press WinKey+W on my keyboard to switch the dialog to that folder. If you don't want to remember all your shortcuts, you can press WinKey+A at any time to bring up a list that allows you to simply select the folder. The program does not launch any folders by itself, it only works with Open/Save dialogs. [MWA]

IEMate v6.0.3 [378k] W9x/2k/XP FREE

http://www.devicode.com/freeware/iemate.htm

{Customize Internet Explorer} We have written many tips to help our readers customize Internet Explorer, and many of those tips required a registry edit. IEMate is an application that will allow you to customize Internet Explorer without having to directly access the Windows Registry. You no longer have to live with software applications "branding" your Internet Explorer. With IEMate, you can type what you want in the title bar, change the start page, and even whether it should start in full screen mode or not. You can also change the logo in the upper right hand corner or set a toolbar skin using any BMP file on your computer. IEMate also allows you to set where downloaded files are saved. In the Tools section, you will find a button to organize your Favorites, search for files, and even get into your Internet Options. If you make a major goof, don't worry; just hit the Reset button and everything will go back to Internet Explorer's default settings. You have nothing to worry about, so why don't you head on over and give it a try? (I know you are sick of that AOL icon in the upper right-hand corner...) [BS]

New Freeware: Easy Thumbnails
Scribbled by Eric Fookes

http://www.fookes.com/ezthumbs/

Hello Chris, [I] hope you're doing well. It's been a long time since I've released a new title, but here it is. With a bit of luck, it will become as popular as NoteTab Light. Due to lack of time, the program hasn't been properly launched yet. Would you like to be one of the first to announce it through your newsletter? Here's a brief intro to the program: Easy Thumbnails is a new freeware utility for creating thumbnail images for the Web and scaled-down copies from a wide range of picture formats. The user-friendly interface makes it easy to find your images and select them for processing individually, in batches, or in whole folders, using a well-designed file selector and built-in image viewer. You can use slider controls to rotate images and adjust their contrast, brightness, sharpness and quality, and preview the results. Easy Thumbnails is a genuine product, without the annoyance of advertising, intrusive spyware components, or nag screens. You can download your copy and read more about this Windows software by visiting my Web page. Hope you like it!

TinyURL

http://tinyurl.com/

{Makes long addresses short} "URL is long / I must cut and paste it now / Dude, so annoying." That was my haiku about how upsetting it is to see a broken URL on an e-mail message because the gosh darn thing is fifty miles long. Listen, before you blast another lengthy link to your friends, run it through this Web-based service first. It shortens those long URLs into something more concise (and more accessible). "Once this [Bookmarklet] is in your toolbar, you'll be able to make a TinyURL at the click of a button. You can also make a smaller URL that will work for any page on your site." The link will work the same way on any machine. And ya know what else is fun to do? Try using random characters on your own - you'll see what people are linking to.

Windows 2000 Event & Error Messages [Possibly XP]

http://www.microsoft.com/windows2000/techinfo/messages/

"This page lets you search for most of the error and event messages generated by the Windows 2000 operating system. Get detailed explanations and suggested user action for each message. This search does not find every error and event message, as messages can be generated by any software or hardware that you install on your system. You can download a listing of all of the events that that can occur in Windows 2000. This list contains the events, which log they appear in, their event IDs, their event sources, and whether the event is informational, a warning, or an error. Sometimes, the only suggested user action is to obtain help from your technical support group. In that case, we suggest that you collect the [listed] information before contacting technical support."

Set Up an FTP Server in Windows 2000 / XP

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;q300662

"This article provides a step-by-step guide for setting up a File Transfer Protocol (FTP) server in a Windows environment for anonymous access. Because FTP depends on Internet Information Services (IIS), you must first make sure that IIS is installed. To install IIS and the FTP service, follow these steps: Click Start, point to Settings, and then click Control Panel. In Control Panel, double-click Add/Remove Programs. Select Add/Remove Windows Components. In the Windows Components Wizard, select Internet Information Services (IIS), then click Details. Select Common Files, Documentation , File Transfer Protocol (FTP) Server, and Internet Information Services Snap-In, and then click OK. Click Next. If you are prompted to configure Terminal Services, click Next. If you are prompted for a path for a FTP root folder, type a suitable folder path. The default is C:\ Inetpub \ Ftproot. For additional security, an NTFS drive is preferred. Click OK to continue. When you are prompted, insert the Windows 2000 CD or provide a path to the location of the files, and then click OK. Click Finish."

Task Killer v1.57 [21k] W9x/2k/XP FREE

http://www.rsdsoft.com/zip/taskkiller.zip
http://www.rsdsoft.com/

{Kill programs} Task Killer is a program that will terminate running programs instantly. That's why they call it the Task Killer. It sits in your system tray, and every running program / process can be accessed simply by left-clicking on the icon and navigating the menu. This is extremely helpful when an application (like Internet Explorer) freezes. We all know that programs tend to do that from time to time. Heck, it's even happened on my iMac - so don't go thinking that Windows is the only locktastic operating system out there. I wouldn't suggest killing programs indiscriminately. If you don't know what something is, killing it could cause your entire system to falter. If all else fails, search for the program's name on your favorite search engine. Could be normal, could be spyware, could be a virus? If you ignore it, don't think that it'll just go away. Kill it if it shouldn't be there.

Geometry Calc v2.6.2 [596k] W9x/2k/XP FREE

http://homepage.mac.com/teast/geometry1.zip
http://homepage.mac.com/teast/
http://screenshot.lockergnome.com/geometrycalc.png

{Calculator for geometry} I still use a calculator quite often, but it's really just a substitute for my actual brain (which has never cared much for numbers). There are different branches of mathematics, though, like geometry. See, ya knew I'd get to the point eventually. "Geometry is an application which was designed for math teachers to easily calculate the volume and surface area of common geometric figures. I must also thank Leslie Hash for her input in creating algorithms for finding surface area and volume. Thanks to Mike Wysocki for his input in developing algorithms for metric / standard conversions. I also need to thank Tom Erwin (Author of TrackAddict) for the source code for using Disclosure Triangles."

CSDiff v3.0 [1.0M] W9x/2k/XP FREE (compare files)

http://www.componentsoftware.com/sftp/csdiff.zip
http://www.componentsoftware.com/Products/CSDiff/
http://screenshot.lockergnome.com/csdiff.png

{Compare two files} "Ah, I could have sworn I just read this sentence in the other e-mail you sent me. My eyes are getting tired flipping back and forth between the two documents, though. If only there was a better way." Stop! This handy app will allow you to compare two revised files or folders. In an instant, you'll see what changes have been made - which is especially helpful when you're dealing with a large document containing a ton of information. Any other method of analyzing would just be tedious. "CSDiff is commonly used when analyzing program source files as well as HTML and Word documents." What's the difference? You tell me. Or better yet, let CSDiff give it a shot.

Tiny Key Logger v1.0.1 [51k] W9x/2k/XP FREE

http://home.rochester.rr.com/artcfox/TinyKL/TinyKL.exe
http://home.rochester.rr.com/artcfox/TinyKL/

"Tiny Key Logger is a very small program that runs hidden in the background, and secretly records every keystroke pressed in all applications. Each time a key is pressed in a different window, it logs the window title and application path, along with a timestamp. This allows you to know exactly where and when the keys were pressed. Are your children using the internet when you're not around? Tiny Key Logger will be able to tell you exactly what they have been doing. WARNING! Tiny Key Logger will log all passwords, credit card numbers, and other such sensitive information entered via the keyboard, to an unencrypted file on your hard drive. Compatible with different keyboard layouts. Does not appear in the Task List in Windows 9x. Does not appear under Add/Remove Programs. Can automatically run every time your computer starts."

Cache Decimator v31.33.7 [36k] W9x/2k/XP FREE

http://members.aol.com/gluetube149/cdv3.exe
http://members.aol.com/gluetube149/
http://screenshot.lockergnome.com/cachedecimator.png

{Cover your tracks} It's not that you're ashamed of where you've been on the Internet, it's just that it's nobody's business where you've been. If you have this program running on your system, you'll have instant access to such functions as clearing history, emptying the recycle bin, clearing the Run history, clearing Internet Explorer's cache... it just clears a lot of stuff, okay? Aside from keeping prying eyes away from where you were, it's also a good way to keep your system light and running like it should: fast. "An additional option enables you to allocate the amount of bytes in your Recycle Bin and empty it upon request."

Hacker Translator v2.4 [235k] W9x/2k/XP FREE

http://www.grovers.com/bin/hcktrans.zip
http://www.grovers.com/
http://screenshot.lockergnome.com/hackertranslator.png

{Translate hacker} Do you know what hax0r-speak is? No, it's not the new Perkins dinner special. Some of you just nodded, while the rest of you thought: "What in the heck is this man talking about?" Well, it's a hacker thing - a special typewritten "code" that looks like gibberish to most people. If you use this tool, however, you'll be able to translate those seemingly random characters into plain English. And vice versa. Yeah, this might not be at the top of your priority list, but the next time someone uses this code in a chat room, you'll know what's being said. NOTE: this is only a 16-bit program, but it should run fine in your OS. Or my name isn't [|-||2!$.

GreatFamily v1.1 [921k] W9x/2k/XP FREE (Family Tree Software)

http://www.greatprogs.com/download/GF_Setup.exe
http://www.greatprogs.com/
http://screenshot.lockergnome.com/greatfamily.png

{Make a family tree} Imagine a program that lets you create a family tree. Sound interesting? Now how about an easy Web page maker that lets you turn that family tree into a Web page? Yep, that's just what this thing does. It's great! It's for families! It's GreatFamily! The interface is fairly user friendly, so you won't need a degree in clickology to get started. There's also a name search - and you can print the whole works out if you so choose. "Customize the pages by selecting your own colors, backgrounds and more. A great way to distribute your tree to friends and family!" Little did you know that my father's mother had the same last name as my father's father. That, and both my father and mother's father and mother's father and mother were from the same village in Italy. True dat.
WINIPCFG.EXE for Windows NT/2k/XP

http://microsoft.com/windows2000/techinfo/reskit/tools/existing/wntipcfg-o.asp

"This GUI tool gives you information about your IP configuration. The resulting screen identifies your IP address, subnet mask, and default gateway for each of your network interfaces, including the interface for your network adapter, your Dial-Up Networking interface, and your PPTP interface. Each downloaded tool includes the files required to run the tool, a documentation file, and a readme file with general information about the downloaded tools and Resource Kit tools." It works just like WINIPCFG did in Windows 9x. In fact, I'd suggest renaming the binary (to its more familiar name) and copying it to your Windows folder.

HTTHOST v3.SN2 [757k] W9x/2k/XP FREE
Unearthed by Adrian Santangelo

http://www.htthost.com/httport3sn2.exe
http://www.htthost.com/

"HTTPort allows you to bypass an HTTP proxy, which is blocking you from the Internet. With HTTPort, you may use the following software (just a sample list, not limited to) from behind an HTTP proxy: e-mail, IRC, ICQ, news, FTP, AIM, any SOCKS capable software, etc. The basic idea is that you set up your Internet software in such a manner that it considers your local PC to be the remote server it needs. This is where HTTPort enters. It intercepts connections from the software and runs the connection through the proxy - this is called tunneling. HTTPort performs tunneling using one of two modes. The following schemes will give you the idea."
JPGVideo v1.01 [450k] W9x/2k/XP FREE

http://ariel-associates.com/ndrw/download/free/jpgvideo.zip
http://www.ndrw.co.uk/free/jpgvideo/
http://screenshot.lockergnome.com/jpgvideo.png

{Make a JPG video} This program allows you to take several JPGs and splice them together into a video. It's not a bad way to show off your photographs, give presentations, and it's also a good way to show off your past Webcam shots. It's just plain cool. Besides watching the JPGs as a constant video stream, you can also look at the JPGs frame by frame if you so choose. "These files can be from any source, as long as they are all the same size, but generally these will be from a Web camera. Each frame is given the name of the JPG file used to create it and can be viewed, if using Windows Player by selecting View | Captions."

In addition, Cerberus FTP Server offers statistics on connections as well as logging capabilities. The server adheres to to RFC959 and RFC1123."
Floppy Image v1.5.2 [139k] W9x/2k/XP FREE
Unearthed by Zanferrari Domenico

http://www.rundegren.com/software/floppyimage/FloppyImage.zip
http://www.rundegren.com/
http://screenshot.lockergnome.com/floppyimage.png

{Burn images of floppies} A picture is worth a thousand words, and a disk image is worth a heck of a lot more - especially if you've got old floppies with valuable information on them. Remember how, back in the day, you spent weeks slaving over your old term papers, manuscripts, and so forth... thousands of bytes, right? Don't lose those pieces of history to floppy decay; image them with Floppy Image and ensure that your works live to infinity and beyond. After all, someday someone will be interested in reading your interpretation of symbolism in T.S. Eliot's "The Wasteland," your Master's thesis, or your Star Wars fan fiction about the thrilling secret romance between Chewbacca and Princess Leia. "You can choose to save the image file compressed, uncompressed or as a self-extracting exe file. You can also add descriptions to your image files."
RichProfile v1.0 [35k] W9x/2k/XP FREE

http://desktopengineer.com/downloads/richprofile.zip
http://desktopengineer.com/article.php?story=20011129081953709

"RichProfile was created out of desperation! A sheer dire need, after 10 years of systems administration, and always requiring a decent Mail Profile creator at all the corporations that I have worked for. The problem existed with utilities like Profgen and NewProf, which (quite frankly) were always a pain to implement, often did 'weird things,' and the good old INI files were a bit of a joke! I hacked the Registry to re-use a blank mail profile and populate the server / user in it - finding that (six months later) Microsoft decided to redo the GUID's for some of the profile keys / values. So, I set out to create a simple (yet precise) Mail Profile Creator for use in Login scripts with Kixtart, VBScript, or as an externally-called file from your own corporate startup utility that everyone seems to run."

My Logo v1.0 [269k] W9x/2k/XP FREE

http://www.edensoft.com/mylogo/MyLogoInstall.exe
http://www.edensoft.com/mylogo/
http://screenshot.lockergnome.com/mylogo.png

{Personalize IE's toolbar} This program provides several ways to personalize your Web browsing experience. First of all, you can get rid of that annoying logo at the top right corner of your window and replace it with one of your own. Neat! Then, you can change the text in the title bar. Cool! That's not all, though. You can also have an extra home page which can be accessed via the new logo you created. You can also designate a sound to be played when a page opens, and watch a movie while waiting for a Web page to load. "For optimal system resource utilization and performance, EdenSoft recommends that you use animated cursors for your animations."

Disable SuperCookie Tracking for all Windows PCs

http://home.kscable.com/wecoyote/NoSuperCookies.inf
http://home.kscable.com/wecoyote/

"If you haven't heard, there is a unique identifier that Windows Media Player assigns to every user that you can optionally disable within Windows Media's settings. However, even with the Media Player not reporting this ID, IE leaves this ID open to the world via the wonderful world of ActiveX, creating an ID that is just custom for you! This new privacy hole is called a SuperCookie. So, I wrote a simple install file called NoSuperCookies.inf that can be installed on all versions of Windows to Zero out this value to make you non-identifiable. Maybe someday, Microsoft will fix this privacy problem. But at this point, they have known about it for about a year and have not addressed it via ActiveX."

Bookshelf v2.7 [360k] W9x/2k/XP FREE

http://www.text-reader.com/
http://screenshot.lockergnome.com/bookshelf.png

{Read to me} Reading from a computer screen is fine and all, but who doesn't like to curl up with a good book every now and then? Well, Bookshelf won't turn your computer into a real bookshelf, but it will take any document and make it LOOK like a book. No more reading plain text on white background; now you can flip through your documents just like you were turning real pages. And the best part? No fear of paper cuts. Heck, I feel just like a professional writer now. At least, it gives that illusion. "It has a wide choice of page styles and convenient navigation system. Bookshelf easily allows you to come back to the read books and to open them in the place where you have stopped." For a good e-texts library, be sure to swing by Project Gutenberg.

Ya know how Netscape (AOL) is now basing and building their browsers on top of open-sourced "Mozilla" code? Well, when Sun nabbed StarOffice, the project remained independent. This will probably be in perpetual beta, but as I've said before: it sure beats the heck out of plopping down a few hundred hard-earned bucks just to type up a document or complete a spreadsheet. OpenOffice will do it all for you - for free. And, it's compatible with Microsoft formats! If they'll continue to develop and improve the interface, I could easily see this become the next valid "office" software competitor.

Mini Personal Web Server v1.2 [1.1M] W9x/NT/2k FREE

"[This is a] Simple and easy personal Web server that will allow friends and family members to view Web pages and download files from your own Windows-based PC. There are no fancy features to deal with - no cgi, no asp, or anything else to complicate your basic need to show your own Web pages. Every effort is made to ensure that software from Eyris Development works to expectations, but of course, not everything in the world is perfect. So, if you do encounter an error with a program from here, please report it to the contact information that is provided with the program you have chosen."

KF Web Server v1.0.6 [644k] W9x/2k/XP FREE

http://www.keyfocus.net/kfws/

{Web server} You work for a small company and your boss just came in to your office. He said he wants a company Web site, and he wants it up NOW. What do you do? Do you try to sign up with Web hosting even though you know that budget is an issue? Why go through that rigamarole when you could install KF Web Server onto a machine your company already owns? KF Web Server is a fully functional and free HTTP Web server "that can host an unlimited number of Web sites" (depending on Web traffic). KF Web Server can host multiple domain names and "listen" on many different ports. This application comes with a wide variety of features, which can all be configured and administered via Web browser. Some features include custom error messages, HTTP compression, CGI/1.1 support, logging, plus many more. KF Web Server also comes with built-in countermeasures to prevent Denial of Service and password dictionary attacks. KF Web Server is a great way for a small company to gauge the impact of the Internet on their business without having to shell out a lot of money (at least initially). CAVEAT: I personally recommend using this ONLY if you have a high- speed, always-on connection.

Windows 9x. In fact, I'd suggest renaming the binary (to its more familiar
name) and copying it to your Windows folder.

http://www.bustrace.com/downloads/CDIdentifier.exe
http://www.bustrace.com/products/cd-dvd.htm
http://screenshot.lockergnome.com/cddvd.png

{Disc drive details} So tell me: what can your CD or DVD-ROM do, exactly? If you don't know, then at least this application does. Can your drive recognize or create CD-R media? How about handling CD-RW discs? Can it recognize a DVD? Can you listen to an audio CD through it? Hey, ya never know. If you're looking for a quick and concise way to find out just what the heck that little cup holder can (and cannot) do, then give this a spin. Ha! You might even consider throwing it onto a floppy to identify someone else's CD drive details.

DoubleDesktop v2.0 [204k] 9x/2k FREE

http://www.fatfreesoft.com/2desk20.exe
http://www.fatfreesoft.com/2desk.html
http://screenshot.lockergnome.com/doubledesktop.png

{Double that desktop} I like to keep my screen somewhat uncluttered. However, if you have a ton of links and applications stored on your desktop, maybe it's time to double the size. But won't you have to get a bigger monitor? No, sir. No, madam. This application lets you toggle between the right and left side of your "larger" desktop with the click of a button. Now you can keep one side clean and another peppered with your shortcuts. That's just one idea. Y'all can do whatever you'd like with it. "To move a window from the one virtual screen to another, just drag the window beyond the screen boundaries."

http://www.xp-antispy.de/
http://screenshot.lockergnome.com/xpantispy.PNG

{No more spies} If you've made the move to XP, you might want to take a quick look at this program. For you see, XP has an "Automatic Updates" feature (among other things) that might be sharing more of your info than you'd like. Turning these features off in Windows may not make you feel safe enough. This tool will take care of your system in an instant. It's a great way to clear away all the ghosts lurking around in XP that you're just not sure about. "It's customizable, but comes up with the Default settings, which are recommended." "AscToTab is simple utility that converts plain text files containing table data into either HTML or RTF (rich text format) tables. The software can also convert files of tab-delimited or comma-separated (.csv) data into tables. For tab-delimited or comma-separated files, conversion is more straightforward. AscToTab will convert one table row per line, placing each delimited value into the next column. You can tell the software what type of file you are converting, and whether you want to convert to HTML or RTF tables. HTML tables can optionally be copied to the clipboard, ready for pasting into a HTML source editor. For all formats a line containing a row of dashes will be taken as signifying the separator between table header and border."
