Unlike the monopolized word processor, Atlantis is compact and can convert graphical images. Its features are too numerous to mention. Immediately noticeable differences include the hot calculator, which performs mathematical calculations, and getting the document statistics with one click (I love this). Also unique is the clippy bank, a feature similar to the clipboard for adding or removing data. The learning curve for using Atlantis Nova is small for anyone who has used MS Word. It didn't feel awkward or new to try it out. This may be the solution for those with zero or small budgets. The program DOES support .DOC files, so opening such files isn't an issue. QuickMenu extends this functionality by making it easier to drag and drop applications to it or through the program's dialog box. This is a figure-it-out- yourself program, because there are no instructions included. Since the utility is from Japan, the English is imperfect. On the main dialog box, select "Folder" to add a folder or click "Paper" to add a file to QuickMenu. Continue doing this until all desired items are selected. Clicking on the QuickMenu icon in the system tray lists the selected items. In the dialog box, select "Enable Desktop Menu Shell Extension" to get QuickMenu to appear when right-clicking the Desktop. {Personal Web server} Running a Web server isn't just for hosting a Web site on a computer. It's a great tool for learning .asp, .php, and .cgi scripting. Apache is one of the more widely used free Web server applications, but it's complicated and not easy to learn without some help. Furthermore, it does .php, but not .asp. Microsoft's IIS is another tool, and you can install it to learn .asp, but not .php. Abyss Web Server can support .asp, .php, and PERL after downloading additional free software. Abyss uses a graphical user interface for managing the server, making it easier for users to manage, even remotely. The application is small by server standards, and doesn't hog the memory. Remember the golden rule of a Web site: the smaller the file, the faster it downloads, and the shorter the wait. Oh, and it also keeps bandwidth use as low as possible. The first test was a JPG file that I had optimized using a graphics program. StripFile couldn't compress it further. Next, I tried a few files I downloaded from free resources, and StripFile reduced them to 30 to 50 percent. I let it strip an entire folder of over 300 free downloaded files and it stripped about 28 percent total, saving about 7,209,326 bytes. In comparing the "before" and "after" file folders, the numbers told the story: the files got smaller. My only complaint is that the utility creates a backup folder in different places, depending on what folder is stripped. DrvClonerXP copies an entire drive partition sector-by-sector,
byte-for-byte directly to another drive partition, producing an
exact reproduction (clone) of your original partition. No
intermediate file is created in the process. Unlike a disk imaging
tool, it does not save the image to disk (for backup or other

{Kill programs} Task Killer is a program that will terminate running programs instantly. That's why they call it the Task Killer. It sits in your system tray, and every running program / process can be accessed simply by left-clicking on the icon and navigating the menu. This is extremely helpful when an application (like Internet Explorer) freezes. We all know that programs tend to do that from time to time. Heck, it's even happened on my iMac - so don't go thinking that Windows is the only locktastic operating system out there. I wouldn't suggest killing programs indiscriminately. If you don't know what something is, killing it could cause your entire system to falter. If all else fails, search for the program's name on your favorite search engine. Could be normal, could be spyware, could be a virus? If you ignore it, don't think that it'll just go away. Kill it if it shouldn't be there.

It's not a bad way to show off your photographs, give presentations, and it's also a good way to show off your past Webcam shots. It's just plain cool. Ya know how Netscape (AOL) is now basing and building their browsers on top of open-sourced "Mozilla" code? Well, when Sun nabbed StarOffice, the project remained independent. This will probably be in perpetual beta, but as I've said before: it sure beats the heck out of plopping down a few hundred hard-earned bucks just to type up a document or complete a spreadsheet. OpenOffice will do it all for you - for free. And, it's compatible with Microsoft formats! If they'll continue to develop and improve the interface, I could easily see this become the next valid "office" software competitor.

Slap integrates with ZoneAlarm and BlackICE and allows you to send a response message "slap" to IP addresses that are scanning your ports. The program then sends a custom message (default: Leave me alone) to the originator of the scan.
