The following table shows some of the common line designations and Cable Types:

  • DS0 - 64 kilobits per second
  • ISDN - Two DS0 lines plus signaling (16 kilobits per second), or 128 kilobits per second
  • T1 (DS1) - 1.544 megabits per second (24 DS0 lines)
  • T2 (DS2) - 6.312 megabits per second (96 DS0 lines)
  • T3 (DS3) - 43.232 or 43.736 megabits per second (28 T1s) (672 DS0 lines)
  • OC3 - 155 megabits per second (100 T1s)
  • OC12 - 622 megabits per second (4 OC3s)
  • OC48 - 2.5 gigabits per seconds (4 OC12s)
  • OC192 - 9.6 gigabits per second (4 OC48s)
  • Cat 1 - voice only, household station cable.
  • Cat 2 - voice only, high-pair count feeder cable.
  • Cat 3 - voice or 10baseT data levels, available in 4-pair for workstation cabling or in high-pair count for feeders.
  • Cat 4 - voice or 10baseT data levels, no longer produced.
  • Cat 5 - voice or 100baseT data levels, available in 4-pair for workstation cabling or in a high-pair count for feeders (the one most often used in home network environments).
  • Cat 5e - enhanced Category 5 performance, normally only available in 4-pair workstation cable [the one I use on my home network, for less data collisions].
  • Cat 6 - gigahertz level data transmission (1000baseT), available in 4-pair workstation cable (overkill for most users today).
